Buchanan confident of more success at Wyong

- — Matt Jones

WYONG trainer Kristen Buchanan is flying high this year and she’s hoping to continue her rich vein of form at Scone today.

Buchanan has already trained more winners this season (24) than any other but it’s come from just 98 starters.

She thinks her confidence has been infectious in her stable.

Earlier in the year, she said Laszlo could win at Warwick Farm despite starting at $41, and he got up.

“I’m more confident these days. I don’t know why but I wish I could bottle it,” she said.

“I think I’m just paying a lot of attention to where I place my horses.

“I’m more firm about not starting horses where they can’t win, given different circumstances like track surfaces and barrier and I’ve just been patient.”

She put the success down to the fact she’s also got a good crop of horses coming through that she’s been educating for a couple of years and they’re now starting to flourish.

“It seems very easy at the moment which is nice. We’ve got roughly a 25 per cent win and 50 per cent place strike rate this season,” she said.

“I didn’t have a winner for two weeks and I started to panic. Once upon a time that was normal.”

Direct Vision is one that she’s hoping is a bright horse and he has his first start today in a Maiden Handicap (1100m).

He had two nice barrier trials in the spring but hasn’t been seen since.

“He’s a really nice horse. I love the stallion (Direct Charge). He’s by the same sire as Arrogante. I’ve got a couple of them on the ground and going and all of them seem to be very handy horses,” Buchanan said.

“He’s trialled well and has had a grass jump out at home and he’s ready to go to the races. I think he’ll run a hell of a race.

“Against him is that he hasn’t had a trial this time in but he’s done plenty of work at home and I’m happy with his fitness.”

From barrier three with Serg Lisnyy on board he should have the gate speed to get into a nice spot and the jockey has ridden him in both trials which only helps.
