Many benefits to a dose of Toowoomba Garden Releaf

-

STOPPING to smell the roses may soon become a common health practice, as the benefits of spending time in the garden are uncovered.

Recent research documented in the journal Scientific Reports said people who received a dose of 30 garden therapy minutes a week were more likely to have healthier physical, social and mental well-being than those who didn’t.

Luckily for Toowoomba residents, the Garden City has plenty of places to get amongst nature.

Another place to rack up your “green minutes” is at the fifth annual National Garden Releaf event at The Springs Garden World this weekend.

“Being outside in a garden, in a park or hiking along a trail can do wonders for your physical health and mental well-being,” The Springs Garden World founder Ashley McEwan said.

“I was on the land and I used to garden as well, and I noticed that it was my stress relief.”

Knowing the role garden therapy can play in supporting positive mental health, proceeds from the Releaf event will be donated to Beyond Blue.

“In total, Garden Releaf has raised more than $226,000 for Beyond Blue,” Mr McEwan said.

“This is an amazing contribution which has provided free and immediate mental health support to more than 4700 people.”

There will be an array of events taking place at The Springs during opening hours tomorrow and Sunday, including kids gardening activities, succulent garden lessons and a live jazz performance.
