THE YEAR AHEAD

Off the back of two trials against Redcliffe and Chinchilla, Brothers head into their centenary season eager to make an impact on the TRL Premiership.

“The effort from the players in the off-season has been great. They’ve really worked hard, and even though at times it’s been tough getting players to training because of work, the boys have worked really hard,” Brothers coach Chris McEwan said.

“We have looked at a game model we want to play this year, and in our two trial games we have tried to make that work.

“We’re not going to make any bold statements about where we will end up. It’s a cliche, but we really need to take it one week at a time.

“Against Redcliffe we were able to complete at 89 percent against a quality side, which we were ecstatic about, but things can change in the space of a week.

“We will look at what we can achieve in the first three weeks and assess things after that.”

Among the new additions to the club is former Mustangs five-eighth Wally Pegler.

“Wally is still young and learning the game,” McEwan said.

“The benefit with him is that he is willing to learn and wants to work on the little things. He is going to be a good player down the track.”

PLAYER TO WATCH

Mitch Revell. “He’s going to be very good for us. He’s a quality player and is someone to look out for,” McEwan said.

“We need him to do his job. He’s in a position where he has to roll up his sleeves, but he will be a big part of the set structure.”

VERDICT

The Brothers coaching staff is the first to admit they lack a genuine star to take them forward into the season. What they do have though is a number of committed players busting their backsides on a weekly basis. Their roster is young and on the improve, so while their time isn’t right now, it won’t be too far away.
