DENIM DAYS

LEAN INTO SOME AWESOME JEANS THIS AUTUMN AS COMFORT ZIPS AHEAD OF TIGHTNESS IN THE FASHION STAKES

- WORDS: AMBER MACPHERSON .......................

There’s nothing quite like a pair of excellent jeans to make you feel a little excited for winter.

Sure, the colder months mean dry skin and no swims, but rocking some great denim can definitely lift the spirits.

Lee designer Ash Pierce says women will be opting for loose-fitting jeans in light tones this autumn.

“There is a definite trend that is consistently growing in this area for rigid or low-stretch denim in vintage fits,” Ash says.

“Womenswear will see a stronger lean into anti-fit jeans in vintage washes. Girls want that authentic look and feel with a modern spin.”

For men, close-fitting jeans are still the order of the day, however, Lee designer Radar Hang says we’re seeing an experimental approach to baggier trousers.

“Men have only just got used to wearing the skinny jean in the past decade when the band The Strokes came on to the scene with their revival stovepipe skinny jeans,” Radar says.

“It’s always a steering ship when it comes to men’s denim trends.

“The skinny jean is still the main and familiar trend but I do believe there is change in the wind for the more comfortable and contemporary loose-fit jean.

“We see all the forward hype skaters wearing looser silhouette fit jeans cropped shorter in leg lengths.

“It will take time for the masses to follow this trend, but it is coming.”

Radar says denim colours for men will transition from light to dark as the months progress, but black will remain a trusted neutral colour.

“In the warmer months of the year we see light, bright and vibrant blue washes, but moving into the cooler months you may see a slight shift into the mid to light blues but not so much a dark dye,” he says.

“The darkest shade that men turn to is the trusty black denim jean if they want to wear the darker shade.”

Ash says women are able to pick from a variety of colours at Lee but dark jeans are a smart option.

“I am seeing a shift towards lighter and brighter washes for women but we ensure we always offer a full library of washes to choose from,” Ash says. “Black jeans are always a win.”

Both Ash and Radar believe jeans are becoming a more acceptable piece of attire for important occasions, as long as they’re good quality.

“Well-made jeans are a wardrobe staple and buying the right fit and wash can mean denim can easily transition from day to nightwear,” Ash says.

“It’s just a matter of getting the right pair to coincide with your outfit.”
