WORKER RIGHTS

-

An LNP Convention is to debate banning employers from sacking workers who tweet and evangelise their religious views (TC 13/07/19).

That’s like the farm dog barking at a car as it disappears in the dust. Federal LNP did nothing to protect religious freedom in the last Parliament and now the footie row with Israel Folau erupts over LNP members heads.

Groom MP John McVeigh issued comforting words to note the PM was committed to, ‘the protection of workers rights’ on the expression of their faith.

But Federal legislation may be unable to counter the current state laws on this issue.

The Weekend Australian (6/7/19) Legal Affairs Editor Chris Merritt quoted Patrick Parkinson, University of Queensland Dean of Law.

The Federal religious discrimination act “would not solve all or even most of the problems with religious freedom in Australia at all.’

John McVeigh, who voted in favour of same sex marriage, should know Roman Catholic Archbishop of Hobart Julian Porteous, found himself in deep trouble.

He simply distributed a booklet on Catholic doctrine of marriage, to his flock.

He mistakenly thought he had a right to explain his church’s teachings under Australian law.

Martine Delaney, a transgender activist and Greens candidate claimed offence.

Tasmania’s Anti-Discrimination Commission agreed but the complainant withdrew before the case was heard.

There is no reason to believe our Labor Left State Government would legislate to protect employees religious views here.
