Belligerent drink-driver cops spray

A 29-YEAR-OLD man who was belligerent and verbally abusive toward police officers who were simply doing their job and arresting him for a high-range drink-driving offence has copped a dressing down from a Toowoomba magistrate.

Dylan James Cruickshan Edge had been pulled over by police on North St about 1.30am, June 22, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

The 29-year-old blew a breath/alcohol reading of 0.156 but became upset and argumentative when told he was being taken to the police station, police prosecutor Nicola Prince told the court.

Telling police they were his servants as he paid his taxes and that they should simply drive him home and forget about it, Edge was taken to the police station but initially refused to walk into the police station and had to be forcibly moved, she said.

Inside he was belligerent toward the officers and repeatedly called police a derogatory term.

Edge pleaded guilty in court to driving while under the influence of liquor and obstructing police.

Duty solicitor Amy Zanders told the court her client had been at a party that night but had decided to drive home.

An obviously unimpressed Magistrate Robbie Davies told Edge he had been driving at more than three times the legal limit and that police were simply doing their job.

“You were obnoxious ... out of control,” Mr Davies told him.

Edge told the court he was sorry for his actions.

“I’m grateful I didn’t hurt myself or anyone else,” he told the court.

On the drink-driving offence, Mr Davies convicted and fined Edge $500 and disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for six months.

Edge was fined a further $500 on the obstructing police charge but Mr Davies ordered that conviction not be recorded.
