The Chronicle GARDEN COMPETITION 2019
The Chronicle would like to welcome previous and new entrants to the 70th year of The Chronicle Garden Competition in 2019. The entry form for The Chronicle Garden Competition is below.
The entry form needs to arrive at The Chronicle office before 4.00pm AEST on Wednesday, 31 July 2019. Entry forms must be original newsprint and must be signed by the entrant. All entrants must be located within the Toowoomba Regional Council boundaries to be eligible to enter.
The gardens will be on display to visitors during the 70th Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers which runs from Friday 20 September – Sunday 29 September 2019. Please note that
entrants are required to have their gardens open to the public from 9am until 5pm each day of the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers unless otherwise stated.
Entrants should take their own advice in regard to their insurance position, but it is recommended that they notify their own insurer of their intention to participate in the competition and request that their insurer confirm that it will respond under their Policy to any claim made for damage or injury suffered by a third party while an entrant is participating in the competition.
All gardens will be judged on a points system from a set criteria. With different judges each year it is not
possible to know exactly what each judge is looking for.
However, here are some hints and tips that are intended to be a guide only:
• Consider design and general appearance - aspects such as layout, colour, use of line, form, texture and plant use.
• Maintenance — limited dead and diseased plants, well presented lawns and clipped and well-shaped shrubs, garden beds will need to be neat and tidy and free of weeds.
• Consider the flow of your garden, its pathways, “rooms”, themes and unique spaces.
• Massing of trees, shrubs and colour where possible will be taken into
consideration — permanent plantings are important, as well as the floral colour.
• Effective use of existing features in the overall design ie. sculptures, bird baths, tree stumps, rockeries, archways.
• Where relevant, floral effect should be a consideration including colour harmony and culture.
Judging will commence on Monday 2 September 2019 and be finalised by Friday 6 September 2019 (weather permitting). The judging team may arrive at the entrants’ property on any of these judging dates. The Chronicle will endeavour to contact each entrant with a date for judging and an approximate time, however an exact time cannot be provided.
