CITY GARDENS
All entrants must be located within Toowoomba Regional Council boundaries. Gardens must be open to the public from 9am until 5pm during the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers 2019. Please see thechronicle.com.au/ competitionterms for more detail.
GRAND CHAMPION:
The winner will receive $1,200, a holiday voucher valued at $1,200 from Stonestreets Travel, the Cec Swenson Perpetual Trophy, The Chronicle Trophy and the Susie Penfold Award.
RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION:
The winner will receive $1,000, a holiday voucher valued at $1,000 from Stonestreets Travel and the John Albion Memorial Trophy donated by Nursery & Garden Industry Queensland.
RESIDENTIAL CLASSES
Entrants may enter only ONE of the following:
CLASS 1: Large Garden
Open to gardens on properties with an area of 1000 sqm or more. Judged on whole of garden basis. 1st – $1,000, plus Pearl Beh Memorial Trophy donated by the Leafmore Garden Society, 2nd – $800, 3rd – $500.
CLASS 2: Small Garden
Open to gardens on properties with an area less than 1000 sqm. Judged on whole of garden basis. 1st – $1,000 plus Yates Perpetual trophy plus Clive and Monica Conquest trophy; 2nd – $800; 3rd – $500.
CLASS 3: Front Garden
The front garden will be judged back to any dividing fence or natural screen, but no further than the back corners of the house. 1st – $1,000 plus Pohlman’s Nursery Trophy, 2nd – $800,
3rd – $500.
CLASS 4: Back Garden
The back garden will be judged forward to any dividing fence or natural screen, but no further than the front corners of the house. 1st – $1,000, 2nd – $800, 3rd – $500
CLASS 5: Design Concept Garden
A special nominated part of a garden will be judged for the most effective, significant, innovative or creative design concept. May include sustainability, usability, form and function of a garden. The winner will receive the Margaret Timbs Design Concept Award Trophy, entry pass for one to attend all The Chronicle Exhibition Gardens 2019 and entry into the 2020 Leafmore Garden Society Winter School. 1st – $1,000, 2nd – $800, 3rd – $500.
CLASS 6: Heritage Bank First Time Entrant Garden
Open to any sized garden which has not previously been entered by the current owner in the competition. 1st – $1,000 2nd – $800, 3rd – $500. First Time Entrant gardens will only be required to be open to the public on the weekends during the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers (unless awarded Grand Champion or Reserve Grand Champion). Entrants cannot win this category if the property has been purchased from a previous Garden Entrant who has won Classes 1-7 in the last three years.
CLASS 7: Best Sustainable Garden (including Waterwise)
Judged on features illustrating sustainability of whole garden area. The garden is to be a liveable, vibrant outdoor space, well designed and largely self-sustaining, and demonstrates eco-friendly gardening practices. These practices include the effective use of natural resources and compatible materials, the utilization of local species, and the design and nurturing of plantings which suit local conditions, complement the local environment and promote its biodiversity. The garden must demonstrate that it is waterwise through the capture, retention, and efficient use of rainfall and other water sources such as town water. 1st – $1,000, 2nd – $800, 3rd – $500. Prizes awarded by Toowoomba Regional Council (Waterwise).
COMMERCIAL AND NOT-FOR-PROFIT
Entrants may enter only ONE of the following:

OPTIONAL CLASSES
To enter an optional class you must also enter a class from 1 to 7. You can enter 3 options ONLY:
OPTION 1: Predominantly Australian Native Garden
Best native garden comprising predominantly Australian native flora. 1st – $500 plus Toowoomba Society for Growing Australian Plants trophy, 2nd – $350, 3rd – $200.
OPTION 2: Floral Garden
This garden can include –annuals, perennials, flowering shrubs or trees. Gardens to be judged for overall floral effect. 1st – $500 plus the Artie Bichel Memorial Trophy, 2nd – $350,
3rd – $200.
OPTION 3: Heritage Bank Cottage Garden
A cottage garden demonstrates informality and predominantly cottage garden plants. A substantial portion of a garden; whole garden, front or back can be entered in this class. 1st – $500 plus Heritage Bank Perpetual Trophy, 2nd – $350, 3rd – $200.
OPTION 4: Best Display of Potted Plants
Can be a collection of a single genus, shadehouse or a grouping of any pots. For residential gardens only. 1st – $500, 2nd – $350, 3rd – $200.
OPTION 5: Lifestyle Unit Dwelling Garden
Garden must be planted and maintained primarily by unit resident. 1st – $500 plus Walsh’s Seed and Garden Nursery Trophy, 2nd – $350, 3rd – $200. Cannot be a single dwelling.
OPTION 6: Small Space Garden, Courtyard or Bush House
Small space garden, courtyard or bush house with an area of less than 40 sqm. 1st – $500; 2nd – $350; 3rd – $200.
OPTION 7: Best Productive Garden
Entrants should display vegetable and herb gardens which may include fruit trees, vines and bushes. 1st – $500 plus trophy, 2nd – $350, 3rd – $200.
ABC CLASSES
City entrants may enter any of the following provided they are entered in Classes 1- 7. Entrants cannot enter ONLY ABC Classes. Please indicate on the entry form to nominate which ABC Classes you wish to enter.
ABC1: Outdoor living area. 1st prize – Green Thumbs experience with Penny & Mike, pennant & trophy, 2nd prize – pennant, 3rd prize – pennant.
ABC2: New front garden. Established in the last 3 years. Front garden only will be judged. 1st prize – Green Thumbs experience with Penny & Mike, pennant & Rod Hultgren Perpetual trophy, 2nd prize – pennant, 3rd prize – pennant.
ABC3: Garden without any annuals.
1st prize – Green Thumbs experience with Penny & Mike, pennant & trophy, 2nd prize – pennant,
3rd prize – pennant.
ABC4: Family Garden - Garden which incorporates features for all of the family to enjoy e.g. play areas, chicken coops and animals as well as flowers, fruit & vegetables.
1st prize – Green Thumbs experience with Penny & Mike, pennant & trophy, 2nd prize & 3rd prize – pennant.
