NUCLEAR POWER

-

REGARDING the proposed nuclear power station for Toowoomba, I think this is a delusion of grandeur by the Australian Nuclear Association that will never get the support of the Toowoomba community let alone the Federal Government.

One only needs to remember the nuclear power plant accidents of Chernobyl, Fukushima, and let’s not forget Three Mile Island in 1979 and Saint Laurent in 1980. In fact, there have been 57 accidents involving nuclear power plants since the Chernobyl disaster.

Nuclear fuel rods generate incredible amounts of heat, which must be cooled to a reasonable temperature by large amounts of water. With Toowoomba having a period of 20 years of high level water restrictions at one point in time, you can clearly see that the water needs of a proposed nuclear power plant here could not be met.

I think the Federal Government has an agenda to develop nuclear power as a step along the road to developing nuclear weaponry, which some conservatives in the government want to keep the rise of China and North Korea in check.

And what is to say that this proposed nuclear power plant won’t become a target for terrorists, who might want to destroy it and contaminate Toowoomba and our water supply which we hold so precious with radiation, making it undrinkable.

The whole nuclear issue is so divisive it will polarise Australians just to consider it as a viable energy solution. There is a nuclear fusion power plant in the sky, it is called the sun, and we should use it.
