Mustangs hope to swoop on Magpies

-

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Western Mustangs are still on a high as they prepare to finish their Hastings Deering Colts season, and they’re confident of claiming one last scalp.

The Toowoomba-based side was a resounding winner in its final home game of the season, putting 50 points on the Redcliffe Dolphins, and they are hoping to close out the year on the right note.

Despite just three wins, coach Eugene Seddon said they were keen to come back from Davies Park tomorrow afternoon with their fourth.

“Souths-Logan aren’t the strongest side running around,” Seddon said. “We’re going there with the expectation that anything less than a win is not acceptable.

“We’ve had Monday, Wednesday and Friday sessions to prepare. It’s just a matter of going out there and putting it all together.”

The Magpies proved too strong for the Mustangs the last time the two sides clashed, with the visitors taking home a 47-10 victory at Gold Park in round 11.

On that occasion, the Mustangs had to contend with Australian Schoolboys halfback and Gold Coast Titans signing Tanah Boyd, who won’t line up tomorrow.

“I thought he made a difference last time, but they have some good forwards and they will try to play us around the middle,” Seddon said.

“I believe games are won and lost in the middle, 80 percent of the time. If we can lay the platform for our halves, it opens up more opportunities for our outside backs.”

Currently sitting in 13th spot on the ladder, and with 12thplaced Redcliffe coming up against a Mackay side pushing for the top-four, a win would likely see the Mustangs leapfrog the Dolphins on the ladder.
