Police investigate ‘high impact’ collision which claimed young life

INVESTIGATIONS into a crash that claimed the life of a Pittsworth man and injured a family including a toddler at the weekend are continuing.

Zachary Gleeson died at the scene of the two-vehicle collision at Mount Tyson on Sunday.

The family travelling in a second vehicle, a man, 43, woman, 41, and girl, 2, suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The 19-year-old from Pittsworth was the sole occupant of a vehicle which collided with another at the intersection of Jondaryan Mount Tyson Rd and Toowoomba Cecil Plains Rd about 3.10pm Sunday.

The occupants of the second vehicle, a 43-year-old male driver and female passenger, 41, and two-year-old girl, were taken to Toowoomba Hospital.

They suffered minor injuries and were released from hospital.

The woman and young girl suffered chest injuries, while the man suffered injuries to his arms.

Police said the trio were from the same family.

POLICE SPOKESMAN

Investigators are working to determine what may have contributed to the deadly collision in the 100kmh zone, including whether one of the vehicles failed to give way to traffic.

The intersection has give way signs installed.

Police believe excessive speed may also have been a factor in the collision with both vehicles extensively damaged on impact.

“It was a high impact crash,” a police spokesman told The Chronicle.

“The crash happened in a 100kmh zone.”

The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing an appeal for any witnesses to the crash to come forward, particularly anyone with relevant dashcam footage.

One person is believed to have contacted police as part of the investigation.

The Jondaryan Mount Tyson Rd and Toowoomba Cecil Plains Rd intersection is the main crossroads linking Mount Tyson with Mount Tyson, just west of the Beef City Feedlot west of Aubigny.
