Runners set to sizzle in Postle Gift

- GLEN MCCULLOUGH glenm@thechronicle.com.au

RUNNING: Pittsworth teenager Pat McGinn realised he’d experienced something special after competing at last year’s Arthur Postle Gift meeting.

He also knew it was something he wanted to be a part of again.

Today the Pittsworth State High School student and rising rugby league talent returns to Club Pittsworth looking to soak up the experience of his second professional running meeting while trying to make his mark on the event.

This afternoon and evening’s program features handicap racing from 75 yards to 300 metres for males and females in junior and open age groups.

The meeting is highlighted by the 75-yards Youth race, the $5000 75-yards Women’s Gift and the $5000 75-yards Arthur Postle Gift for all-comers.

All events are sanctioned by the Queensland Athletic League.

The meeting and Arthur Postle Gift is run in tribute to former Pittsworth sprinter Arthur “The Crimson Flash” Postle who blazed a world record trail in the early 1900s.

Last year’s Gift was won by 18-year-old Max Mason, a fifth cousin of Arthur Postle.

Mason returns today to defend his Gift title.

Seventeen-year-old McGinn contested last year’s under-18 120-metre event and Arthur Postle Gift.

The under 18 and under-20 Western Mustangs back is concentrating this year on the 75yards Youth.

“It was a great experience being a part of the first meeting here last year, and I realised straight away that I wanted to come back and be a part of it a second time,” McGinn said.

“Last year I did the main Arthur Postle Gift race and the under-18 120-yard race as well where I was lucky enough to come in fourth.

“It was really interesting.

“I feel a lot quicker than I did last year and the experience of running last year was really good and hopefully that will help me this year.”

McGinn said the meeting had created a lot community interest and first-time spectators today were in for a colourful experience.

“With events like this, the town loves it,” McGinn said.

“Last year was a great turnout and I’m expecting nothing less on Saturday. I’m sure people will come and support what should be a great day.”

Trackside activities planned for today include:

■ Children non-professional events ■ Youth activities ■ Outdoor movie night for the children ■ Inflatable obstacle course ■ Jumping castle ■ Inflatable soccer ■ Outdoor movie screen ■ Outdoor markets■ Postle Gift Calcutta.
