Hopes for 1000-plus hikers in fundraiser
TIFF Spary is constantly amazed at the compassion shown by Toowoomba towards people battling homelessness and other disadvantages, which is why she’s asking them to “take a hike” next month.
The co-coordinator behind the Base Services is hoping to crack the 1000-participant mark at the fourth annual Hike for Homeless event on October 26 at Jubilee Park.
The major fundraiser for the Base Services, which runs the Basement Soup Kitchen, was launched at the site of major event sponsor Armstrong Auto Group yesterday morning.
Last year’s hike, which featured 5km, 10km and 20km routes to suit different ages and fitness levels, was enjoyed by more than 700 participants and raised $33,600 for the organisation.
But Mrs Spary and her husband Nat have even bigger goals for 2019.
“It’s overwhelming to see how much it’s grown,” she said.
“A few years ago, there wasn’t a large awareness of homelessness, but the willingness of our community to get involved and show compassion is amazing.
“We had 700 participate last year, so I would love to crack 1000, and I think we definitely have the potential and the compassion in the community to do it.
“I get calls from so many families who ask how they can get involved – this is how.”
Fairholme College will play a big role in fundraising for the hike, thanks in part to the efforts of Year 10 student MJ Scanlon.
“The Hike for Homeless has helped me re-imagine the way I help. Giving back to our community is so important to me,” she said.
“That’s why three years ago, I decided to organise for Fairholme College to give to their community.”
