Breen resigns from Neers coaching role
The Toowoomba Mountaineers men are on the hunt for a new coach for the 2020 season.
The club board confirmed that coach Danny Breen’s resignation has been accepted.
“It is with regret that the Mountaineer board has accepted resignation of Danny Breen as the men’s coach,” Mountaineers director of operations John Gouldson said.
“He has not taken up his option of a second and third year of his contract with the Mountaineers.
“The tyranny of distance, with travelling from Brisbane three or more times a week, in addition to his work commitments in Brisbane, have proven to be too great.
“We’re appreciative of what he has done with the team, who were very competitive in the league in spite of the win/loss record, and we believe he brought a high level of performance out of the young players.
“The board is now calling for nominations for the position for 2020. We hope to get the position filled ASAP so team planning and recruitment can take place.”
Breen took over the role from Danny Morseu, who agreed to terms on an extension for the 2019 season, before taking up a role on Thursday Island.
Player personnel issues plagued the Mountaineers men throughout the season.
Local forward/centre Paul Aleer was released prior to round one by Breen, while key recruit Daniel Sims was a notable omission from the club’s final three games of the year.
The men’s team struggled to a 1-17 finish, putting them at the bottom of the QBL standings.
