Spark ups preparations for crucial MacDonald fight
BOXING: Steve Spark’s bid to break into the world’s top 15 super lightweight boxers went up another notch this week in the countdown to his crucial November 2 bout at Rumours International.
Spark faces Brisbane-based James MacDonald on the TGW & Smithy Bring The Big Fights 24 bill in a bout that will propel one fighter up the world rankings and stall the loser’s career momentum.
It will be Spark’s first appearance since claiming the vacant IBF World Youth Super Lightweight title with a fourth-round knock-out of classy Mexican Luis Castillo at Rumours in March.
The Castillo fight was followed by extensive surgery on Spark’s troublesome right hand which this week came through its latest comeback test.
Spark and gym-mate Herman Ene-Purcell travelled to Brisbane on Thursday for sparring sessions against quality opponents with trainer Brendon Smith declaring both fighters on track for upcoming assignments.
Ene-Purcell fights Viliamu Motusaga in Auckland on October 4.
“Both boys had quality ring time against well-credentialled opponents in what is virtually a barrier trial for them,” Smith said.
“Stevie took on Ben Kite who is in a higher weight division and gives us good rounds.”
MacDonald, has a record of 11 wins (eight by ko) and one loss, and is from the Glenn Rushton gym where the stable includes Jeff Horn, Dennis Hogan and Cameron Hammond.
Spark’s eight victories have all finished inside the distance.
“There is a lot on the line for both fighters come November 2,” Smith said.
“Glenn speaks highly of James and he knows what’s at stake.
“Both fighters are looking to move into the world top 15 and Glenn believes they are coming up here with a 50-50 chance to take away the win.
“We know what Stevie brings to the table but there is no chance of us underestimating the ability of James.”
