Girls claim first title

Toowoomba’s girls have claimed bragging rights in the inaugural Central Crows U18s girls carnival in Murgon.

The girls were clinical throughout the carnival, starting with a 26-0 defeat of South Burnett, before they shut-out Sunshine Coast to the tune of 44-0, before sealing tournament honours with a 36-10 win over Rockhampton.

Their preparation wasn’t exactly orthodox, with girls coming from all over the Darling Downs to be a part of the team, meaning they weren’t able to have a full training session before travelling away.

With players from Toowoomba, Warwick, Pittsworth, Talwood, St George, Texas, Dalby, Gatton and the South Burnett, it made it tough to get everybody in the same place at the same time, however player Reeghyn Beardmore said previous experiences with each other helped them to gel.

“It was a solid team. We didn’t have much training together, but we’ve all played together at some point,” Beardmore said.

“It made our combinations pretty easy to manage. We knew what each other was doing.”

Their attack was on song throughout the carnival, however one of the most impressive things for Beardmore was the side’s defensive resolve, conceding just two tries across their three games.

“We played well throughout the games. Our defence was one of the better aspects,” she said.

“We were strong in both defence and attack. We made a few errors that gave them opportunities, but other than that we held pretty strong.”

Toowoomba was rewarded for a strong showing against their opponents, with seven of the 13 spots in the merit side filled out by the girls.

Katelyn Anderson, Reeghyn Beardmore, Abelee Stanley, Taylah Stanley, Courtney-Lee Nolan, Amanda Hinch and Tenesha Trunks were honoured in the merit side.
