Speedway year set to launch

SPEEDWAY: Tribute will be paid to Arthur Wieden, one of the greats of Toowoomba speedway, when the new racing season starts at Toowoomba Hi-Tec Oils Speedway tonight.

Wieden passed away on September 15 after a long battle with illness.

Four Australian titles and four Queensland title wins in Modified Production were amongst his long career highlights.

Tonight’s racing is headlined by the opening round of the Ultimate Sprintcar Championsh­ip which will bring some of the biggest names in sprintcar racing to the Garden City.

Warrnamboo­l’s Jamie Veal and Tasmanian Jock Goodyear are among starters in a huge line up of talent including current Australian champion and Highfields’ resident Andrew Scheuerle.

Modified Sedans, Street Stocks and Modlites will also kick off their respective Toowoomba club championsh­ips.

Leading the charge in the Modified Sedans will be local Rodney Pammenter who will be doing double duties also driving a Modlite.

Defending Cowboy Cup series champion Nathan Polich will likewise be putting his best Modlite foot forward when he comes up against Dalby’s Terry Leeinfeldt , Rodney Pammenter and Scott Lehfeldt.

A quality field of Street Stocks will converge on the high banks of Toowoomba Speedway.

The national Street Stock division continues to grow in popularity as fans enjoy the competitiv­e nature and raw excitement of the racing.

Monster Trucks and fireworks also feature on the program.

Gates open at 3pm.
