10 THINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND

LOOKING for something to do? There’s heaps on for the final weekend of the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

1. SPRING POLO

WHERE: Queens Park

WHEN: Today, 11.30am-5pm

TOMORROW is your last chance to head along to the Spring Polo in Toowoomba and organisers are promising a top day of ponies, fashion, eats and drinks.

For the final time, Queens Park will be transforme­d into a polo arena with two spectator friendly polo games, fashions on the field, the traditiona­l divot stomp and more.

Organisers announced last month the 2019 Spring Polo would be the last, “based on several financial factors”.

Although tickets to some sections have sold out, there are some still available.

2. COMPETITIO­N GARDENS

WHEN: Today and tomorrow WHERE: Various locations

IT’S your final weekend to check out the stunning gardens across Toowoomba as part of the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

The Chronicle Garden Competitio­n winners will have their extravagan­t gardens open to the public today and tomorrow.

3. NIGHT GARDEN

WHERE: Queens Park

WHEN: Today, 6pm to 8.30pm

TONIGHT is your final opportunit­y to check out the unique light installati­ons in the Ergon Energy Night Garden in Queens Park.

Entry to the interactiv­e display is $10 for adults, $5 for concession card holders and students, and $2 for children 13 and under.

4. BAR WUNDER TURNS 1

WHERE: Bar Wunder, 424 Ruthven St WHEN: Today from noon

BAR Wunder is throwing a birthday bash as one of the Garden City’s newest bars celebrates one year of trade.

The celebratio­n will include a photo booth, free cupcakes for your four-legged friends, live music, prizes and heaps more.

The bar’s owners are also encouragin­g people to come dressed as their favourite era, whether that’s the ’20s, ’60s or ’90s, from 7pm.

5. THRIVE ON ARTS

WHERE: Empire Theatre

WHEN: Today and tomorrow

A CREATIVE space for youngsters and families continues at the Empire Theatre this weekend.

Thrive on Arts celebrates play, imaginatio­n, creativity and storytelli­ng during the Garden City’s more vibrant time of the year.

The program during the day includes movie screenings and other performanc­es aimed at the younger generation.

6. SOUNDS OF THE DEEP

WHERE: Empire Theatre

WHEN: Tonight, 7.30pm

THE Queensland Symphony Orchestra brings its Sounds of the Deep to the Empire Theatre on Saturday night.

Music lovers can expect a dazzling evening comprised of symphony classics.

The performanc­e follows successful concerts like Films and Flowers in 2018 and Movie Masterpiec­es in 2015.

The concert is held in conjunctio­n with Thrive on Arts.

Tickets are $50 for adults, $47 for concession card holders, and $25 for youth under the age of 25.

7. TOMBSTONE TOUR

WHERE: Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery

WHEN: Today, 10am to 11am

HISTORIAN Peter Cullen will take visitors through the history of Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery with a guided tour today.

Peter will explain the significan­ce of the floral cemetery symbols and visit the graves of some of the people who helped make the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers what it is today.

Ticks are $25.

8. POSTMODERN JUKEBOX

WHERE: Empire theatre WHEN: Tomorrow, 8pm MUSICAL collective Postmodern Jukebox will welcome you to the 2020s with a trip through our musical history at the Empire Theatre this weekend.

Founded by Scott Bradlee in 2011, Postmodern Jukebox reworks popular songs into the genres of swing and jazz.

The collective’s covers have gone on to amass more than 1.2 billion views on YouTube and it has played hundreds of shows to sold-out houses on six continents.

9. CARNIVAL CAPERS

WHERE: Toowoomba Repertory Theatre, 94 Margaret St

WHEN: Today, 7.30pm and tomorrow, 2pm

THE Toowoomba Repertory Theatre hosts the final of its Carnival Capers for Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers this weekend.

Brisbane dance group Celestial Effects presents Elementals tonight, a show that “explores the beauty and necessity of the natural world through dance, poetry and community”.

Tomorrow, you can see the Second Chance Theatre Company’s presentati­on of There’s a Song in That, the story of two friends who are still trying to make a go of it in the music industry.

Today’s performanc­e starts at 7.30pm, while tomorrow’s starts at 2pm.

10. BOOK LAUNCH

WHERE: Koorong’s Toowoomba store, 837 Ruthven St

WHEN: Tomorrow, 11am

PODCAST host and author Jessica Kate is set to launch her debut novel in Toowoomba this weekend.

The launch of Love And Other Mistakes includes a book signing, games, a reading and book discounts.

Love and Other Mistakes follows Natalie Groves, who believes she was meant for great things.

But after her fiancé Jeremy Walters breaks off their engagement and leaves town and her father is diagnosed with cancer, Natalie’s grand plans evaporate and God feels very far away.
