INDOOR CRICKET: The next generation of indoor cricket stars added another trophy to the Toowoomba Dragons’ cabinet recently.

Battling the heat and tough opposition, the Dragons U16 squad successfully defended their title in Townsville.

The Dragons, who beat fierce rivals Strathpine Burras 93-81 in the final, won eight of their nine games on the way to claiming the championship.

Captain Matthew Nunn said the side’s success had been built on playing with the right attitude.

“I think skills don’t come into too much at this level,” he said.

“All the teams are very strong and every player you face can bat, bowl and field very well.

“The big difference is your attitude – you have to make sure you give it everything you can in every game.

“I think our team deserves a lot of credit for that.

“Everyone in the team had the right attitude – we gave it our all in every game and supported each other the whole time.”

Despite being the only mixed team, the Dragons still managed to dominate the titles and all nine players were named in Queensland Development squad.

“Playing against the boys can be a bit tough – they’re a little bit stronger and can bowl faster – but we held our own,” Matthew’s sister and teammate Amy Nunn said.

“We have been playing together for a few years so you get used to it. The competition was tough, but our whole team was amazing.

“To win the title two years in a row is pretty amazing.”

With another trophy in their cabinet, the Dragons players will turn their attention to potential Queensland selection.

“We’ve another three tough days coming up for the camp,” Amy said.

“It’s a lot of fitness and skill work but it’s worth it.

“You’re always trying to improve yourself and that’s the best way to go about.”
