Ted saved by plasma

Red Cross Blood Centre calls for more donors

WHEN many people hear the word plasma they think of televisions, but to Toowoomba’s Ted Marsden plasma means life.

Diagnosed five years ago with rare neurological disorder CIDP, Mr Marsden now relies on plasma product IVIg and a full plasma replacement weekly to survive.

“As a donor of both blood and plasma for many years I really didn’t understand the value that I was adding to someone’s life,” he said.

“Now I know and appreciate how important plasma can be to the quality of someone else’s life.

“Having lived a very active life and having always enjoyed being on or in the water I am now truly excited when I can regularly spend a couple of

hours kayaking around the rivers and canals at Mooloolaba, which is only possible because of the extensive plasma treatment that I have been able to have through the generosity of many plasma donors.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you to all plasma donors, and to future plasma donors.”

Australian Red Cross Blood Service spokeswoman Belinda Smetioukh said Australia was experiencing a significant increase in demand for plasma and plasma products.

“Over the last decade, the demand for some plasma products has increased by around 10 per cent every year,” Ms Smetioukh said.

“Blood donation is not just about the red stuff.

“Plasma makes up the majority of our blood, and is full of important proteins and nutrients that protect us against invaders and help our blood to clot.”

This week is International Plasma Awareness Week, which Ms Smetioukh said highlighted the importance of plasma donation and recognised the role of plasma donors in saving and improving lives.

The Toowoomba Donor Centre has 350 plasma appointments available over the next four weeks.
