Young boxers gear up for charity night

-

BOXING: Emerge will hold its inaugural Box Off the Streets Corporate Charity Fight Night in The Irish Club’s carpark tonight.

The event is a joint initiative by Emerge and The Irish Club to raise money to eliminate youth homelessness in Toowoomba.

Proceeds from the night, which starts at 6pm, will help the Emerge Youth Hub keep its doors open in 2020, and continue offering the popular mentoring and fitness program for disadvantaged youth.

Emerge CEO and Founder Jen Shaw said Box Off the Streets has proven to be very popular among Toowoomba’s disadvantaged youth, with more than 40 young people taking part on a regular basis.

“Our Box Off the Streets program is just one of the ways we help our young people to gain life skills and reengage with the community. They increase their fitness, receive mentoring and build their confidence,” Shaw said.

Lochie Whant is among those to have benefited from the programs and support the Emerge Youth Hub offers.

“Taking part in Box Off the Streets has really helped me to get my life back on track,” he said.

“The Fight Night is going to be a great chance for me to show the skills I’ve developed over the last six months and the confidence I now have.”

A total of 16 fights will take place on the night, with youth and mentors from the Box Off the Streets program and local corporate identities coming on-board to show their support. Food will be available for purchase on the night from Emerge cafe.

If you’d like to get in Emerge’s corner, there are a limited number of tables and general admission tickets still available for purchase.
