New catcher in town

- ALEXIA AUSTIN alexia.austin@thechronicle.com.au

WHILE many of us were at home unwrapping presents on Christmas Day, Toowoomba’s new snake catcher Anthony Adams was hot on the trail of a carpet python, which was the first of three jobs that day.

Having launched his business, Anthony’s Snake Relocating, in September, Mr Adams said work had ramped up.

“It’s been busy. Some days it’s non-stop and I will get six calls in a day,” Mr Adams said.

“I started right as the snake season was picking up, and it’s going better than I expected.”

Prior to setting up his business, the Toowoomba man had been working as a night fill manager at Woolworths.

“(Snake catching) has always been something I wanted to get into,” he said.

“I was interested in snakes and reptiles from a young age - I’ve had my reptile licence for around 15 years.

“They’re not something I’m scared of, which I think is usually instinctual. I feel quite safe doing it.”

While the sight of an eastern brown would be enough to make most flee in terror, Mr Adams keeps the world’s most venomous snake, an inland taipan, as a pet.

“I have 12 snakes at home, some are venomous, some are pythons, so I’ve had a bit of practice handling them,” he said.

“The taipan isn’t too bad, she’s quite calm and I also have a death adder and a tiger snake.

“I’m quite calm about it, it’s all part of the job.”

For jobs involving the relocation of snakes or reptiles, you can contact Mr Adams on 041 1193 164 or via the Anthony’s Snake Relocating Facebook page.
