Whell to take on elite field
MOTORSPORT: Young gun Nick Whell has a massive challenge ahead of him.
The Toowoomba teen is set to feature in a star-studded World Series Sprintcars field featuring some of Australia and America’s best drivers.
Whell will line up against the likes of nine-time series winner Brook Tatnell and two-time champion Lucas Wolf.
“It’s great to have a round of the world series here in Toowoomba,” Whell said.
“Being able to compete on my home track against all the top drivers that are coming here will be good.
“It’s going to be a massive challenge but I’m going to treat it as a learning experience.”
Racing in Brisbane last week, Whell was running fifth against elite company before a cut tyre bought his race to an untimely end.
“I was in fifth trying to take fourth when the tyre cut up,” Whell said.
“It was really unlucky but it helps my confidence going into the next race.
“The car is running really well at the moment, dad has done a great job with setting it up lately.
“We’ve got good speed and it’s handling well.
“Qualifying will be really important for us.
“Toowoomba is a track where you can just keep it (the accelerator) down pretty much the whole lap.
“I enjoy that type of racing but obviously you want to make it as easy as possible.
“The higher up we can qualify the easier racing it will be.”
The Toowoomba round of the world Series Sprintcars is on Sunday, January 5.
