CRICKET: As the Australian Country Cricket Championships inch closer, the honour of representing his state isn’t lost on one of Toowoomba’s best talents.

Chris Gillam got his first taste of the Queensland Country scene six years ago when representing the side in Canberra.

It was an experience he relished and has fought hard to replicate since.

After being chosen as a shadow player last year, Gillam’s form has seen him force his way back into the side.

“I had a taste of it a few years ago, and it’s something that you always want, to be able to reach that pinnacle,” Gillam said.

“That is the pinnacle of country cricket here, and any time you get that opportunity you want to grab it with both hands and perform.

“The biggest thing I noticed (in 2014) was the step up in class. When you go from club to rep to higher honours, there are a lot of good cricketers there.

“You have to do the onepercenters right for a lot longer, as there are a lot of good bowlers across each team.

“You don’t get that break that you get at club level, where there might be a couple of good bowlers. Each can take your wicket quite easily.”

Gillam is slated to open the batting for Queensland, a role he has become accustomed to for Western Districts.

He said he was looking forward to the challenge of leading from the top spot in front of home fans in Toowoomba.

“I’ve opened for South Queensland (Country) quite often and I’m comfortable with that role,” he said.

“It’s something I’m happy to do, to be able to set the tempo and get the team off to a good start.

“You always want to play on your home ground in front of family and friends, and it will be a good challenge.”

As well as being able to do what he loves, Gillam said the tournament would be a good chance for the Queensland Country side to forget about the recent issues that had plagued the regional areas.

“It gives you time away from thinking about rain and all that. The sole focus is on the cricket and you forget about what you’re doing for a little while,” he said.

“There’ll be a lot of family and friends travelling to watch all of the team perform. We’re hoping for some great support and for people to get the chance to experience Toowoomba.

“It’s a fantastic city and this is a great opportunity to show what our region has to offer.”
