Eising to challenge Antonio for mayor
PAUL Antonio finally has some competition for his job, with a Toowoomba aged carer putting her hand up for mayor at the upcoming council election.
Lindy Eising has entered the March 2020 race, four years after she contested the mayoral seat in 2016.
Motivated to run again by her dissatisfaction with the council’s animal management programs, Ms Eising said she wanted to see fresh faces in the TRC.
“I’d like to see this council dismantled, the figureheads gone, and a new team created,” she said.
“I want a council that cares about not just Toowoomba and Highfields but the whole region.
“The only way to make a council fresher is to bring in new people.”
While not going into detail, Ms Eising also expressed concern for water management across the region and the loss of native habitat, marking her objection to the proposed Defence Housing Australia estate in Mount Lofty.
“We need the native trees back, I’m trying to bring the little birds back (to our region),” she said.
“The koalas have got to be saved, we’ve got to look after what we’ve got, (so) I’m very much opposed to the DHA development.
“We should slow things right down, we shouldn’t be building more houses until we’ve sorted out our water.”
She was also critical of the council’s increases to water access charges.
“That charge has been too high for too long,” she said.
Ms Eising also said she would only accept half of the nearly $200,000 mayoral remuneration, promising to give the rest to charitable causes.
She has asked potential supporters for financial sponsorship to help her campaign.
