TENNIS: Toowoomba Anglican School’s sporting focus is simple.

The school wants as many students as possible participating and enjoying themselves.

That simple focus, however, is producing big results especially on the tennis courts.

TAS was one of just three schools to qualify teams in all three divisions at the Primary School State Championships, with their Red Ball boys squad finishing runners-up.

“I think it’s a fantastic result. Not just for us but for regional schools all over the state,” TAS head of school Simon Lees said.

“It shows that regional schools like ours can produce programs and players who are capable of big things.

“Our main focus has always been just to get as many students as possible involved. At the moment I think we have about 100 kids playing tennis every week.

“Having them develop as players and go on to get these type of results is a bonus.”

Lees attributed the school’s tennis success to the work of a large of group of dedicated staff and students.

“A lot of our senior students work alongside other staff and volunteers helping to coach our younger students,” he said.

“I think it’s great because they’re passionate and the young students look up to them.

“They’re a source of inspiration and I think everyone benefits from their participation.”

More than 350 players and nearly 30 schools were involved in the Primary School State Championships.

To book their place in the finalm TAS had to qualify as Darling Downs regional champion.
