Picnic Nines returns to Queens Park

- SEAN TEUMA

AUSSIE RULES: With the launch of the AFL Darling Downs season inching closer, the league is set to start the year with a big spectacle.

The Picnic Nines is set to return to the scenic surrounds of Queens Park on March 1.

The modified concept, which features nine players on the field at one time and is played without contact, was introduced to Toowoomba last year with the inaugural staging of the event.

This time it will feature two divisions, with an aim to group teams evenly, with prizemoney on offer across both categories.

“We’re offering two divisions, a max and mellow,” AFL Darling Downs regional manager Jeff Neumann said.

“The max is for the serious contenders and the mellow for those wanting a bit of an afternoon out in the sun at Queens Park.

“It’s an opportunity for all levels of teams to come and participate.

“Our inaugural competition saw six teams with some at a senior level and others just here to have fun, so now we can split teams and offer prizemoney for both.”

Neumann said it was a fun way to introduce new people to the sport, as well as encouraging family participation.

“It’s social, fun and active, and is for males and females aged 14 years and up,” he said.

“We’re targeting the family sort of atmosphere, and it’s a way to bring those who haven’t played much football at all into the game.

“It takes out the physical side and is a whole heap of fun. Men and women, boys and girls have played throughout and always gone home with a smile on their face.

“It’s our touch footy version of the game and there’s no better place to have it than Queens Park.”
