FOOTBALL: The Thunder are building toward something big in 2020.

With new coach David Park-Ballay at the helm, a number of key pieces have been added to the women’s squad.

“We’ve picked up a few players with NPL experience which will be great for the side,” captain Mel Lloyd said.

“The enthusiasm the young girls have is fantastic, it’s good to have that energy in the team.

“But it’s also great we’ve been able to bring some experience and leadership into the squad.

“Having a few more level heads when we’re under pressure will only help the team.

“I think we’re positioned well for a really good season.”

Working alongside ParkBallay is also an exciting prospect for Thunder veteran Lloyd.

“We’ve had a really good pre-season so far,” Lloyd said.

“David brings a lot of structure and focus to the team.

“It’s pretty obvious he has a well thought out plan and direction.

“I think he will get the best out of us as players and we will see the best of him as a coach.”

On the road this weekend, the new-look Thunder women will be put to the test by a star-studded Capalaba Bulldogs.

“They have some phenomenal players in their side,” Lloyd said.

“Last I heard they have five former W-League players which is obviously a little bit intimidating.

“That doesn’t matter for us though – it doesn’t matter if you have a team of stars if the chemistry isn’t right.

“Plus, all we can focus on is ourselves. We have to make sure we focus on our team work and what we can do.”

The South West Queensland Thunder will send out junior (boys and girls) teams plus three senior squads to Capalaba for a day of pre-season matches.
