Guide to Australia Day in Toowoomba

IT’S almost time to slap on the zinc and gather around a barbie in celebratio­n of all things Australian.

There will be plenty of festivitie­s across the Darling Downs for Australia Day this Sunday, including an aqua class, themed parkrun and a ceremonial flag raising.

Here’s a guide to what’s on:

Toowoomba

The official Toowoomba Australia Day celebratio­ns will kick off at 8am at Picnic Point this year with a call to order by the town crier followed by a smoking ceremony and a welcome to country.

The Australia Day awards will be presented at 9am and band Topp Gear will play all the Australian classics. Other activities during the day include a rock climbing wall, big slide, jumping castle and train, flag tattoos, damper, snow cones, fairy floss, tea and lamington cake sales by Girl Guides, free sausage sizzle and ice creams. gates on its Australia Day festivitie­s at 9am on Sunday. Entry is by donation in the “wishing well” located in the railway cream shed. The ceremonial flag raising will take place at 11.30am and there will be live music from the Toowoomba Ukulele group at 10.30am - 1.30pm.

Milne Bay Aquatics and Highfields Aquatics

Come enjoy an Australia Day Aqua Extravagan­za class at 9.15am on Monday, January 27 at either Milne Bay or Highfields Aquatic and Fitness Centres. The class is free with pool entry, but make sure to wear your best Aussie gear. All are welcome including children if they are participat­ing with a supervisin­g adult.

South Toowoomba Parkrun

The team at South Toowoomba Parkrun is hosting its first Australia Day dress-up run on Saturday, January 25. The event page tells runners to come to the 268 Stenner St starting point at 7am dressed as Aussie as they like.

Rest of the region Cambooya

There will be a free barbecue breakfast and awards ceremony held at the Cambooya Recreation Grounds on Lucy St from 8am on Sunday.

Clifton

A gold coin will buy you a hot breakfast at Clifton’s Australia Day Celebratio­ns on Sunday. The event starts at 7am at FE Logan Hall, Meara Place and includes an awards ceremony.

Millmerran/Cecil Plains

Come visit Millmerran Lions Park on Mary St at 7.30am on Sunday for a nice hot breakfast and a front seat to the local Australia Day awards ceremony. Morning tea will be served at 11am.
