Thousands nabbed by highway speed cam

A SCARY number of drivers have been busted speeding on one of the busiest sections of the Warrego Highway.

In just two months, a mobile speed camera which was placed at two separate locations on the Warrego Highway caught more than 1300 speeding motorists.

A spokesperson for the Queensland Police Service said the Road Safety Camera Trailer had been stationed on the Warrego Hwy at Crowley Vale, near the BP service station, from November 1 to December 10.

During this period, it detected 540 speeding drivers, with the average speed of 113km/h in the 100km/h zone.

The camera was subsequently moved to underneath the Gatton overpass on the highway, until January 10.

During its time there, another 798 speeding drivers were caught, with the average speed being slightly higher at 114km/h in the 100km/h zone.

The spokesperson said this data referred only to incidents, not infringements.

“Incidents from road safety cameras do not necessarily result in the issuing of an infringement notice,” the spokesperson said.

“Differences observed between the number of incidents and infringement notices issued will be the result of camera testing and adjudication processes.”

The speed camera was deployed to the region as part of a holiday road safety campaign.

During the two month deployment, 700,123 vehicles were monitored by the camera – meaning the speeding incidents were committed by just 0.19 per cent of motorists.

“Several factors are taken into consideration when approving a site, including the number and severity of road crashes at the location,” the spokesperson said.
