HOW TO MAKE THE OUTDOORS GREAT
CREATE AN AL FRESCO LIVING ROOM WITH CLEVER, PRACTICAL CHOICES
Our idea of outdoor living has changed considerably in the past decade. Where once a basic timber table and chairs would suffice, we’re now looking to create entire outdoor living spaces, including coffee tables, side tables, rugs, fireplaces and more.
An outdoor lounge suite that looks like it has been carried straight out from the indoor living room is a key element to this outdoor room, with fabrics that look and feel like linen but are water resistant and are able to withstand harsh UV light.
In addition, quick-drying foam cushions mean a little light rain or overnight condensation are no problem. Styles vary widely from contemporary lounges with exposed legs through to heavier set sofas more compatible with Hamptons-style and resort living. What they all share is lightweight construction, making them easy to move around.
Outdoor floorcoverings have also evolved from rugs that felt more like plastic to ones that look and feel like natural fibres. As is the case indoors, they are a great device for creating zones.
TIPS:
• As you would indoors, look for colour inspiration around you. Shades of green and soft blues are a safe bet.
• If your outdoor space is semi-enclosed, consider ventilation. A ceiling fan not only improves air circulation but adds a resort feel to the space.
• Just because furniture is built for the outdoors, it doesn’t mean it is indestructible. Invest in covers for your furniture when you’re not using it so that it’s clean and dry when you’re ready to go.
