Liverpool move 16 points clear with another win

-

Liverpool have strengthened their grip on the English Premier League title, moving 16 points clear at the top of the table with a 2-1 away win over Wolves.

The result improves Liverpool’s record to 22 wins from 23 EPL games this campaign – their only blemish a 1-1 away draw with Manchester United in October – and they are unbeaten in 40 league games, stretching back to last season.

They can increase their lead to 19 points by winning their game in hand, at West Ham next week, as they close in on their first EPL title since 1990.

Liverpool captain Jordan

Henderson opened the scoring in the eighth minute, heading in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner, before Raul Jimenez equalised for Wolves in the 51st – the first league goal conceded by the Reds in 50 days .

Goalkeeper Alisson Beck made two excellent reflex saves for Liverpool to keep the score at 1-1 before fellow Brazilian Roberto Firmino scored the 84th-minute winner.

“It was an intense game but we kept going and kept fighting,” Henderson said.

“You’re probably bored of me saying it, but it’s just about the next game.

“I want to keep going. Every game is the biggest of the season.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Jurgen Klopp was relieved his side had prevailed in a “really tough game”.

“We didn’t panic, but we weren’t completely in the mood I wanted us to be in when we went 1-0 up,” he said.

The Reds are on the thirdlongest unbeaten streak from the start of a Premier League season, behind Arsenal (38 games in 2003-04) and Manchester United (24 in 2010-11).

They play League One side Shrewsbury Town on Monday morning (AEST) in a FA Cup fourth-round clash.
