Centre grows to meet growth of Highfields
DR NICK Meyers has watched Highfields grow from a small semirural area into a fast-growing community, and his general practice has had to keep up.
The long-term GP and his team at the Village Medical Centre have celebrated the completion of a massive expansion in the Highfields Village Shopping Centre.
The clinic has absorbed the gross floor area of two other tenancies to add more waiting space, doctors’ offices and a treatment room, as well as more than doubling its staff to 22.
Dr Meyers said the expansion was required due to the overwhelming demand for primary medical and allied services in the wider Highfields area.
“This is our fourth expansion, (and) this latest one, we made the decision about halfway through last year,” he said.
“We’ve gone from Dr Roland (Owen) and myself as (two of) three original directors, now we’ve got doctors like Kyle (Johnston) and Majid (Ali) who have both started, and we’ve got another new doctor starting in two weeks’ time who is coming from Warwick.
“On our busiest days, we’ll have eight doctors working.
“I’m booked up a week and half in advance, so we just need more doctors. Last winter, we couldn’t cope.”
The expansion doesn’t stop at primary care, with the clinic also offering physiotherapy, psychology and podiatry services.
“We had psychology here, but it was limited so now we’re going to have psychology for kids and teenagers, and (new) physio and podiatry services have come on board in the past six months,” Dr Meyers said.
“Up And Active are the new physio group at the practice, and they’re coming up two days a week.
“The podiatrist at Sole Focus (at Northpoint) has just hit one day a week, but in March is looking to do two days a week here.”
The rapid growth of Highfields
was been amazing to watch for Dr Meyers, who said he was keeping one eye on another expansion in the future.
“It’s been huge to watch the growth, because I live out here, and none of this was here when I first came out – it was all dirt paddocks,” he said.
“We have kept future expansions in mind, but it’s limited because there’s not a lot of commercial land out here.”
