New Freemasons Lodge
WHAT started out as a bit of a joke some years ago will today turn into reality when a new Freemasons Lodge is consecrated in Toowoomba.
The veil of secrecy that for many centuries has cloaked the ancient traditions of Freemasonry will be lifted at the historic ceremony, where the inner sanctum of the lodge will be open to the public this afternoon.
The premise of the new lodge is based on developing the concept where the traditions and issues surrounding indigenous culture in Australia could be incorporated and the lodge be sensitive to that heritage.
While retaining the regular commitments of all Masonic lodges, it is believed that this is the only Masonic lodge in Australia which will actively promote interest in, support for and connection with the country’s First Nation’s people.
“Some time ago Craig Russell and I, who both identify as Aboriginal, joked about the fact that we were aware of a number of brethren who were of Aboriginal heritage and that one day we may have the numbers to form an Aboriginal Lodge,” foundation member Bill Munro said.
“And years later it is a realty.”
The new lodge will be called Ginan, a name taken from the smallest star in the
Southern Cross constellation, and which for thousands of years has been part of the traditional history of the Wardaman people of the Northern Territory.
The consecration, including a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony, will be held at the Neil Street Lodge from 2.20pm today and members of the public are invited to attend.
