Probus celebrates
THE Probus Club of Toowoomba West celebrated a milestone recently, with members and guests gathering to mark 25 years of fellowship. The club held a luncheon at the City Golf Club to honour the anniversary, and in the absence of president Allen Hubbard, secretary Kevin Harris welcomed almost 80 members and guests to the event. The club was formed in February 1995 and Mr Harris said there were currently 52 members.
Probus is an initiative of Rotary and is a worldwide organisation with hundreds of clubs across the country.
Probus is made up of retired and semi-retired professional people and offers members friendship, fellowship and fun. The club conducts monthly meetings with a guest speaker who often shares entertaining stories about adventures locally, nationally and even from across the globe. Various outings are also arranged once a month including lunches and tours. While the Probus Club of Toowoomba West is a mens only organisation, the women associates of the club attend every second meeting and all of the outings.
As part of the 25 year celebration there were speeches, a table filled with memorabilia, cake cutting, live music and the induction of four new Life Members.
Mr Harris said it was an honour to be named a Life Member as there were only four people previously given that title. “Life Members are people who have been instrumental in keeping the club going and who have been very much in the forefront of working for the club,” he said.
Bruce Tyson, Rod Stirling, Ian Broom and Ross Phipps were all named Life Members.
They were presented with their medals by Probus Association Club Rob Neary.
There was also an honourable mention to the club’s patron Barry King, who was unfortunately absent from the celebrations.
