Lions coming to town

AUSSIE RULES: The Brisbane Lions will head to Toowoomba today and tomorrow for their 2020 AFL Community Camp.

Players Daniel McStay, Marcus Adams, Callum AhChee, Jacob Allison, Connor Ballenden, Hugh McCluggage, Connor McFayden, Daniel Rich, Ely Smith, Brandon Starcevich, Alex Witherden and James Madden will be visiting local schools, AFL clubs and the Toowoomba Hospital during their two-day trip.

“It’s great to head up to the Darling Downs again this year for Community Camp. I have previously been an ambassador for the region and enjoy heading up there when I can. Looking forward to seeing everyone,” McStay said.

Season 2020 marks the 18th year of the AFL Community Camp program.

AFL Queensland state manager – kids, growth and diversity Mark Ensor said AFL Community Camp is an important program that allows them to connect Queensland communitie­s with our game.

“AFL Queensland is committed to giving back to the community, especially those in regional areas,” Ensor said.

“Over two days our AFL Queensland staff and Brisbane

Lions AFL players and coaches will visit over 100 schools, 20 community clubs and reach over 3000 kids.”

Game developmen­t and talent manager – Darling Downs Jeff Neumann said he was looking forward to bringing the Brisbane Lions to the local footy fans in Toowoomba.

“AFL Community Camps are the perfect platform for fans, no matter where they live, to access the game and their favourite players,” Neumann said.

“AFL Community Camps are an important way for us to encourage younger players to get involved in our game. That can be through NAB AFL Auskick, Junior Football, community football and school programs.”

Since the first camps in 2003, there has been 7500 primary and secondary schools visited, 1,500,000 students reached during school visits, 101,000 children attended NAB AFL Auskick Superclini­cs, 48,500 people visited in hospitals and aged care facilities, 49,000 people attended official functions in all areas, 57,000 people have attended community football forums, official functions have raised over $900,000 for junior football, community clubs and local charities.

The Toowoomba public will be able to get up close and personal to the visiting Brisbane Lions players today with the Auskick party at Civic Square from 4pm.
