Domestic violence

-

WE SEE ad nauseam people suffering under domestic violence.

It’s primarily women but it happens to men also and it can be if not stopped then curtailed by politicians with spines who will act to protect the community and stop stuffing about and talking about the problem.

I’m reminded of the scene in Life of

Brian where Brian was being crucified and the committee sat about debating what to do. Politicians talk to the people via TV saying what they’ll do to stop these vile crimes yet do nothing.

I see a simple solution to dealing with the wretches who bash their partners or even on occasion end up killing them – introduce mandatory minimum sentencing.

No liberal soft judge could sentence someone to two years for taking the life of another if the minimum sentence was 10.

If someone bashes his or her partner then on the second offence jail them for three years with no parole.

If they have DVOs against them and ignore them, make it two years non parole.

This would give the victims the chance to break free.

Parole, outside the parameters of my suggestion above, should also be set for all sentences at 75% completion before application for or granting is allowed.

The problem is twofold – politicians who refuse to take control of criminal sentencing by failing to pass minimum sentence laws and judges who persistently impose “slap on the wrist” penalties.

I wrote to the government demanding mandatory minimum sentencing laws to take away the discretion from liberal minded judges and magistrates but the government says they won’t do it. It’s abrogation of responsibility and spineless cowardice. ROGER DESHON, Toowoomba
