RUGBY LEAGUE: A final trial victory has given the Western Mustangs a mountain of confidence heading into the Hastings Deering

Colts season.

The U20s side travelled to take on Easts Tigers at the weekend, and were able to take them down to the tune of 24-12.

It follows on from defeats

of the Ipswich Jets and

Brothers over the past fortnight, and coach Eugene Seddon said their pre-season form has helped to build confidence heading into the season proper.

“We spoke about it after the game and highlighted that while they are just trials, to come out of them with three wins is a good effort,” Seddon said.

“It’s a reward for the last four months of work the boys have put in.

“We understand they are trials and the next game will be worth points, but there are plenty of positives to take away.”

Les Hartvigsen andMamakumai Payai had doubles in the composed display.

“We did our homework on Easts with a few video sessions and tried to break them down,” Seddon said.

“As a team we aimed up and delivered what we had to defensively. That was a real

positive, playing as a team and not relying on individual performances.

“Our structure and shape is slowly coming together and we managed to score some good tries.

“One came from the shape on our edge, which was on the back of the platform laid by our forwards. They got a bit wider of the ruck.”

The side will enjoy a week off now before their round one match against Souths Logan, with Seddon aiming to have his team ready to fire.

“There were a few little bumps and bruises, but we’ll manage that,” he said.

“With no game this will be a physical sort of week and then next week will be more teambased heading into Souths Logan.”

In the U18s Mal Meninga Cup trial matches, the Mustangs went down in both games against Easts.

It started with the first side going down 44-0, before the second team faced the same fate in a 36-4 defeat.
