Nathan eager to update CV

- GLEN MCCULLOUGH

SPEEDWAY: Nathan Macdonald is a two-time Australian championship runner-up.

It’s a feat any speedway competitor would envy and one that proudly sits at the top of the Toowoomba driver’s race record.

But Macdonald thinks it’s time to freshen up his CV and he would like nothing more than to add another highlight at this year’s National Modified Sedan Title.

The 2019-20 championship will be raced on March 20 and 21 at Tasmania’s Carrick Speedway where Macdonald will fly the flag for Toowoomba alongside his brother Shane.

Nathan has finished national Modified Sedan runner-up twice and is hoping he has the car to reel in another podium finish this year.

“I’ve finished second twice at the nationals,” Macdonald said yesterday.

“I’ve been able to live off that for a while now (he laughed).

“But I think it’s about time to freshen things up with

something a bit more recent.”

Macdonald hasn’t raced since mechanical problems ended his bold run in the 2020 Kings Royal at Kingaroy in January but he’s confident he can roll out a competitive car for his Carrick Speedway debut next Friday.

“I’ve raced in Tasmania at Hobart and Latrobe about 10 years ago at the nationals, but this will be my first time at Carrick which is about a half-hour from Devonport in the north of the state,” Macdonald said.

“But that is one of the appeals of our sport, being able to travel to new places, meet new people and experience different tracks.

“I’m taking family with me to be a part of the week.

“Going racing is a good excuse to travel, see the country and race against the best drivers going around.

“Our season started well with a couple of podium finishes at Toowoomba and some other mixed results. “But we had a good car last time we raced strongly at the Kings Royal in Kingaroy. “It’s Australia’s richest race for Modified Sedans and I was running a clear third with eight laps to go before we had a mechanical problem.

“We still finished the race but it was a bit of bad luck we couldn’t finish on the podium.

“So I’m pretty confident we have a fast car to take to Tassy.

“We are hoping to have that bit of luck as well, which is just as important as having a competitive car.

“We had around 70 cars line up for the Kings Royal and there are 50 entries so far for the nationals so we’ll see how we measure up.”

Shane Macdonald will compete for the title in a car owned by Victorian-based John Benson.

Other Queensland contenders for the national crown include Toowomba’s Corey Stein and Mick Shelford.

# TOOWOOMBA will also be represented in Tasmania next month when Robert Trapp contests the National Street Stocks Title at Latrobe Speedway.
