RUGBY LEAGUE: The final weekend of trials prior to the TRL Premiership season proper saw three women’s teams get a last hitout ahead of their inaugural year in the competition.

Among those was Newtown, who ensured they went through the pre-season unbeaten courtesy of a 32-16 defeat of Kawana at the Jack Martin Centre.

Coach Cameron Moodie said the side has come together strongly in a short amount of time, and expects them to only get better as the season rolls on.

“The girls are getting on pretty well and have come together which has been shown by their performances on the field,” he said.

“I couldn’t be more impressed with how they’ve turned what we’ve done at training into the games themselves.”

The club has welcomed a number of players new to the sport, and paired with experienced heads in the side, Moodie said there is a good feeling of success at the club.

“Paige Edwards played her first game across from rugby sevens and she scored three tries,” he said.

“Ellie Bowyer has a javelin background, and she’s taken to the sport like a duck to water.

“Then we’ve got an experienced player like Rosie Gibbs that has played plenty of league before. It’s like having another coach on the field, all the girls listen to her and she guides them around the park.

“We’ve got a pretty good balance of youth and experience in key positions.”

At Father Ranger Oval, the Cowboys women overcame the Pittsworth Danettes 20-4.

Nat Webb scored two tries in the contest, which was marred by a dislocated elbow to Danettes halfback Jordan Dohle.

In A-grade, Newtown was unable to get a win on the board before round one, with Kawana running out 40-10 winners at the weekend.

Warwick was without a number of first-choice players in their match against the Kyogle Turkeys.

It didn’t matter in the end, with the Cowboys scoring a 38-18 victory.

Coedie Tandy started at halfback and finished the game with a double.

Pittsworth’s trial set down for Currumbin Waters was abandoned due to wet weather.
