Family struggles after burglars burn vehicle

- MICHAEL NOLAN michael.nolan@thechronicle.com.au

A TOOWOOMBA family is facing mounting insurance bills and transport costs after thieves destroyed their vehicle.

Sometime between midnight on Saturday and 6am on Sunday, an unknown number of thieves broke in though the rear door of a home on Stenner St at Kearneys Springs.

They stole keys for a Toyota Hilux and a Hyundai sedan, and a tablet computer.

The thieves rifled through the sedan stealing clothes, shoes, jewellery, sunglasses and a custom-made tomahawk.

They left the scene in the Hilux, which was later found burnt out at Hodgsonvale.

The sister of the victim, Sasha Warrington, launched a crowd-funding campaign to help the family recover.

“My brother cannot earn money now,” she said.

“He just started a traffic control course, but now he cannot get there.”

The family must cover costs while they wait for their insurance to kick in, for transport for themselves and their children.

The thieves left the Hyundai but took its keys.

They must be replaced, and its locks changed.

“They have to make multiple claims, and they will need to get taxis to get the kids to and from school,” Mrs Warrington

said.

Toowoomba police are investigating the matter.

A spokesman said it was a timely reminder for residents to lock their doors, to not leave valuables in their vehicles and keep their keys secure.

“Almost every car in Toowoomba is stolen using the keys, all taken from the kitchen bench,” he said.

If you have any information that would help the police investigation or have a dashcam footage of a suspicious Hilux between Kearneys Spring and Hodgsonvale on March 15, phone Policelink on 131 444. To support the family visit bit.ly/3b6oVuQ.
