CRICKET: Western Districts has added another piece of silverware to its growing trophy cabinet.

The defending TCI A-grade premiers proved too strong in the T20 final at Heritage Oval at the weekend, downing Metropolitan-Easts by 14 runs.

The season was hampered with rain delays forcing the abandonment of a number of games, however the top sides again had a chance to add another string to their rivalry.

After being sent in to bat, Wests were able to post a competitive total of 120 from 18.4 overs.

Matt Hallas topscored with 26, while brothers Luke and Sam Neale both had 20.

Pieter van der Kooij (3/18) was the pick of the bowlers, with Jack Carter, Max Dent and Ben Brocherie also taking two wickets apiece.

Met-Easts appeared to be travelling steady enough in their run chase, needing 41 runs to win off five overs with eight wickets in hand.

They weren’t able to get the job done however, with the Trojans losing five wickets in the last two overs to fall 15 runs short.

Shaun McCarthy was a standout with the ball, taking 4/15, with Sam Neale chipping in with two wickets of his own in the win.

A knock of 49 from van der Kooij capped off a tremendous individual effort from the allrounder in a beaten side.

A winner of the two-day competition is yet to be decided.

VOLL PLAYS HER PART IN SHIELD WIN

She might’ve been dismissed by a World Cup champion, but Toowoomba’s Georgia Voll and SandgateRedcliffe are Katherine Raymont Shield champions for 2019/20.

The all-rounder was dismissed for 10 in the final by Warwick’s Delissa Kimmince, who less than a week prior was lifting the T20 World Cup with her Australian teammates.

Kimmince wasn’t able to add more silverware to her trophy cabinet however, with Sandgate-Redcliffe scoring by 31 runs.

In the semi-final the day prior, Voll had figures of 1/6 with the ball and topscored for her team with 45 runs as they edged out Western Suburbs to book a place in the final.

Toowoomba’s Ellie and Ruth Johnston, and Warwick’s Kira Holmes were a part of a beaten Ipswich/Logan side that took on the Gold Coast.

GRAMMAR LETS ANOTHER ONE SLIP

Toowoomba Grammar has suffered another defeat in the GPS cricket season.

Brisbane State High School came to town at Mills Oval, opted to bat first and posted a healthy total of 9/215 from their 50 overs.

Joseph Wood, Jem Ryan, Paul Draheim and Mitch Doolan each finished with two wickets.

In response, the top order for TGS failed to catch fire, with BSHS finding themselves in a dominant position at 6/66.

A quickfire 62 from 56 balls from Sam Anderson, including nine boundaries, helped keep the home side in the contest, however they were ultimately dismissed for 178.
