CYCLING: Rain, hail or shine – Declan Trezise’s training will remain on track in 2020.

Sport may be on hold in Australia but access to virtual reality technology will help the junior national champion maintain his fitness and focus.

Trezise will use a bursary from the Darling Downs Cycling Club to purchase the technology used by elite riders all over the world.

“I’m a very grateful for the support of the club and the cycling community,” Trezise said.

“This equipment is amazing and to be able to train during all this uncertainly is a positive, it means I can stay on track.”

After attaching his bike frame to the rig, Trezise can compete in VR races against riders from anywhere in the world, train with his teammates or ride on any track in the world.

“It means I can train year round, any time of the day or night, regardless of the conditions,” Trezise said.

“More importantly I can train with the right intensity and focus as well.

“I’m based in Brisbane now and on a ten minute ride I might come across three or four sets of traffic lights – having to stop at each set obviously effects my training.

“Then there are things like weather and traffic which are safety issues.

“With this program I can get the bulk of my training done at home if I need to.

“It’s great thing to have and it’s going to help a lot.”

Newly instated DDCC president Trent West said Trezise is the latest beneficiary of the club’s desire to develop its young riders.

“We have a lot of talented young riders in the club,” West said.

“And it was decided by previous committees to put in place a system to support them – competing at the level they do is not cheap – which is why we offer the support.

“Declan is the latest recipient and hopefully this donation of $1000 from the club can help him.”

Trezise is the under-19 road race and criterium champion after winning gold in January’s national titles at Ballarat.
