Technology a lifesaver in virus isolation

SOME traditions shouldn’t end just because you’re in isolation.

Maintaining your normal routine as much as possible is one of Queensland Health’s recommendations to help you emotionally get through the two weeks alone.

For me, that includes afterwork drinks.

A couple of my work colleagues met up for drinks on my boss’ deck on Friday afternoon, maintaining social distancing guidelines while they were at it.

But how could I get there, from isolation almost 200km away? Easy, video call.

And thanks to the quality of the connection, at times it felt like I was actually there exchanging in the banter.

From drinks on Friday to dancing along to the first day of virtual music festival IsolAid on Instagram Live on Saturday and Sunday, it’s incredible how technology is bringing us together in this time of crisis.

Dozens of our best musicians performed live sets on Instagram at the weekend raising funds for Support Act, an artssector support charity.

Artists such as Stella Donnelly, Angie McMahon and Clea performed from their bedrooms, family farms and other locations.

It’s not only live music and connecting to friends that technology is good for in isolation, it can also help make you fit.

I’ve never really been a gym junkie or into CrossFit, so I didn’t really know what to do at home alone.

Thank god for the internet. I headed to the fitness category on my phone’s app store and downloaded several free and paid apps.

In terms of what they do, most apps such a Home Fitness, Fitness Coach, Seven and Zova all offer similar features, such as what kind of workout to do and how long it should be.

I ended up settling on Streak Workout, it cost about $6, but I preferred the minimalist design and how it integrated with my smartwatch.

If you’re in the same boat as me, give a few apps a download and find what works for you.

Another great online fitness tool is Yoga with Adriene on YouTube.
