New sponsor adds more excitement to DDBBL

- JASON GIBBS

CRICKET: A little more excitement and lot more incentive for big hitters has been added to the Darling Downs Bush Bash League.

Hastings Deering has thrown its support behind the innovative Twenty20 competition by sponsoring a “hit the sign” element.

“We’re excited to be able to support the DDBBL,” Hastings Deering operations manager

Justin Butcher said.

“We think it’s a great concept, something the whole community can get behind and enjoy – after all who doesn’t like cricket?

“This will be our first year as supporters and we’re happy to be able to put the challenge out there to the players, hopefully it brings some more fun and excitement to the games.”

The DDBBL enjoyed a breakout inaugural year and co-ordinator Kent Reimers said he believed the added backing of Hastings Deering alongside the continued support of cricket fans would help the competition grow.

“We are very grateful for the support of Hastings Deering,” Reimers said.

“When we started the DDBBL last year we were mindful of not trying to grow it

too quickly.

“Support like this allows us to add a few more bells and whistles in areas to help gradually improve the concept.

“The Hit the Sign competition will add a little more excitement to the game.

“It’s a hark back to the Mercantile Mutal Cup days when they had the same concept.

“We’re not quite at that level though – batsmen here will get $300 when they hit the sign during a game.”

Looking to the season ahead Reimers said interested parties should pencil in a few key dates.

“COVID-19 has impacted a lot of what we’re doing,” he said.

“Obviously there is that little bit of uncertainty but we’re pushing ahead – we really want to capitalise on the success of our first season.

“So far we have had nine nominations for the six captain’s positions and we’re holding our captain’s draft on July 19 at this stage.

“Player nominations open next week and the player draft will be on August 14.”
