Administrator was widely respected
DALE Samuels, 1947 – 2020.
THE death of the last surviving manager of the Queensland State Wheat Board, Dale Samuels, occurred in Toowoomba on Tuesday, April 28, 2020.
Dale started employment with the State Wheat Board as office boy in 1964.
He rose through the clerical ranks and played a role in the administration of the computerised payments system, the hail compensation scheme, and domestic wheat marketing arrangements.
After studying at the University of Southern Queensland, he attained a business degree majoring in bccounting in 1985.
Following the formation of Bulk Grains Queensland, Dale was administration manager of the dual BGQ/SWB operation.
On separation of the two organisations in 1989, he became the manager of the State Wheat Board in its own right.
He then assisted, among many other matters, in the role of the formation of Queensland Grains, a joint venture with the Australian Wheat Board.
He also assisted greatly in the compilation of the wheat board history from its auguration by the then Queensland Government in 1920.
After the cessation of Wheat Pools Acts’ Queensland legislation, and following a nationwide industry deregulation, the board ceased to exist from December 1991.
He then returned to the recently established, mega cooperative, Grainco, where he was state operations manager. He retired in 1999.
Dale was widely respected for his diligence, administrative abilities approachable nature and humanity.
During their retirement, he and his wife Margaret, whom he married in 1969, visited many locations both in Australia
and overseas.
He also had a great love of nature and spent many happy hours in his garden.
Dale passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by Margaret and his three loving daughters, Rebecca, Katherine and Rachelle, after a brief battle with cancer.
He is also survived by their partners, Nathan, Kevin and Richard; and his much loved precious grandchildren, Oliver, Quinn, Archie, Marlow, Johnny and Miri.
Contributed by the chairman and staff of the former State Wheat Board.
