Fly Garden City to Cairns

Airnorth flights to help tourism sector

-

THE sky above Wellcamp Airport will become a touch more crowded when Airnorth resumes its Toowoomba to Cairns route.

From July 18 travellers will be able to catch a direct flight north, twice weekly until the end of September.

This seasonal service comes as Queensland Tourism launched its “You’re Good to Go” campaign.

The advertising campaign will encourage Queenslanders to take a holiday within the state.

The government hoped it would deliver a $1 billion in accommodation bookings over the next four months and revive the tourism industry, after it was laid low by the COVID-19 shutdown.

“Extraordinary times provide us with an opportunity to operate services between these iconic regions,” Airnorth CEO Daniel Bowden said.

“We are thrilled to be able to deliver a much-requested service amid these unprecedented times that enables families to reconnect and providing much needed support to the tourism industry by providing further intrastate travel options within Queensland.”

Wellcamp Airport business development officer Timothy Carney said the site steadily increased in air traffic as the COVID-19 restrictions lifted.

“We are starting to see a return in passenger numbers, not to previous levels though at this moment,” he said.

The centre caters for about 15 passenger flights each week and Mr Carney welcomed the tourism campaign.

“It has meant that Airnorth and Wellcamp can now offer additional services to the region, supporting economic recovery and growth,” he said.
