Mayoral position
THERE has been a number of writers recently expressing views on who ought to take over the mayor’s position, should that need arise.
It has long been my opinion that our local government appointments are less than ideal. A major reason for this is that a candidate for the mayoral position, if unsuccessful, cannot become a councillor. This could mean (and often does) that someone who would have been a valuable member of the council cannot be.
In the state and federal sphere this does not apply, and to my way of thinking is far more satisfactory.
In the current debated situation, the comparison is drawn between the votes for Mayor Antonio and those for Chris Meibusch. The vast disparity may simply be a vote of confidence in Mayor Antonio rather than lack of confidence in the opposition.
But as said before, I think the system F. BARNES, Kearneys Spring needs fixing.
