NEW ERA FOR CLUB
THE South Toowoomba Bowls Club is reborn.
Launched on Friday night, Club Toowoomba as it is now known is set to become a hub for any sporting group or community organisation that needs a home.
Club Toowoomba co-founder Gavin Shuker said the concept was borrowed from the Rocky Sports Club, which he founded almost two years ago.
“It’s basically designed to get community clubs working together to network, fundraise, grow membership and basically just trying to form a family of community clubs and associations,” he said.
“So what we do is we offer a home … so we offer free meeting space once a month for them and free function hire for the end of year function.”
He said when he started the Rocky Sports Club, the aim was to try and get 15 clubs onboard.
Fast forward 18 months and they have 76 clubs and associations, and 23,000 members.
Mr Shuker said Club Toowoomba wouldn’t have been possible without the “vision” and assistance provided by Troy Morgan and Dan Jauncey.
He was also excited to announce that Club Toowoomba had signed a heads of agreement with Rangers (rugby) “to form a partnership to work with the precinct”.
“Which has never been done before,” he said.
“Obviously there’s been three or four entities working within this magnificent sports precinct, but this is the first time (unity) has been achieved within 80 years.
“All the entities will be working together to try and form a community and a family and work together to hopefully achieve better facilities and better infrastructure … so it’s a wonderful thing.”
Mr Shuker said a significant amount of money had gone into revamping the bowls club.
The restaurant’s first day of trade will be July 29, open for meals from Wednesday to Sunday.
“Again it’s based off our model from the Rocky Sports Club – good hearty meals at a decent price,” he said.
The bar and cafe will be open every day.
