Juniors earn their shot

HOCKEY: While there is no J1 hockey in Toowoomba this year, the Garden City’s talented youth boys aren’t being left behind.

An invitational side has been given the green light to compete in Brisbane for the remainder of the season.

Composed of players from all five local sides, the Toowoomba team will travel to the metropolitan centre each weekend, keeping them involved in the sport.

A quality coaching team has been assembled, including rep coaches Grant Campbell and Steve Hawthorne, as well as the assistance of Queensland rep player Max Harding.

“We’ve got lots of keen kids in that age group. They’re talented and we needed to give them a way of playing hockey,” Campbell said.

“There’s still the A-grade comp going and there’s a few on the fringe that are on the bench and some players that are firmly involved.

“For kids that aren’t quite old enough or strong enough for A-grade just yet, they needed somewhere to be.”

With players ranging from as young as 13 through to 17years-old, Campbell said there is a strong assortment of talent within the squad.

“We’re thankful for Brisbane Hockey for allowing us to do it,” he said.

“There’s a good balance between the clubs, all are pretty well represented. There’s a blend of Queensland players and kids on the fringe that aren’t far off that mark.

“It’s good for them to compete. They take on St Andrew’s on Sunday, and they’re one of the top clubs out there.

“Being such a good centre, the talent pool out there is pretty good, and it gives our players an idea of where they’re at, and it’s a good experience to play against different kids and be seen by coaches.”

Campbell said that it was important to keep players under the Toowoomba banner, and as a cohesive group.

“Bring a regional centre, kids are getting to the age where a lot head to university and to Brisbane,” he said.

“This gives them a pathway and keeps them involved in Toowoomba.

“The boys are all great mates and everyone gets along really well. As a coach it’s great to see them enjoying each others company.”
